# Scriber: speak it, hear it

Scriber is a Windows desktop app from [LambdaRidge](https://www.lambdaridge.ai/) for speech to text and text to speech. Dictate, read aloud and keep your text in one app.

## Speech to text

Dictate notes, emails and drafts. Start transcription with a keyboard shortcut and watch words appear as you speak.

Each recording starts a separate session. Copying text keeps the original in place, and transcription history remains on your PC until you delete it.

Optional proofreading helps tidy up dictated text. Compare the correction with your original transcript and choose which version to use. The original words are preserved separately. Proofreading can be disabled in Settings.

## Text to speech

Listen to selected or explicitly pasted text. Unsupported selection controls use the paste workflow. Follow highlighted words, change playback speed, jump back or forward ten seconds, or seek by clicking a word.

Reading history stores the text and last position locally. Opening a saved reading restores it paused. Generated audio is held in memory, so reopening a reading may require new speech generation.

## Data processing

ElevenLabs processes microphone audio for transcription and selected or pasted text for speech generation. With proofreading enabled, Azure OpenAI processes finalized transcript text.

The AI features require an internet connection and your own provider API keys. Provider usage charges and data policies apply. Keys are stored using Windows encryption.

Text histories stay on the device, are not encrypted and are not synced by Scriber. Reading and transcription histories can be deleted independently. Windows Scriber does not save microphone recordings to disk. Copying text uses the Windows clipboard, whose retention and sync depend on Windows settings.
